Kicking off its inaugural flight as Air Force One, a Qatari-gifted jet took off with President Donald Trump on board to head to North Dakota for the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

“I’m very excited about the first flight,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday morning before boarding the plane. “Nobody’s seen anything like it.”

The Boeing 747 was gifted by Qatar to be used in the interim until a long-term pair of Boeing aircraft are put into service, expected to be delivered in 2028, according to Air Force officials.

The two Boeing 747s, specially modified to serve presidential needs, are behind schedule from the 2024 projected timeline to replace the more than three decades-old aircraft that have served as Air Force One.

In the meantime, the Qatari jet will be used as the president’s personal jet after being retrofitted for the task, according to the Air Force.

“This was a gift from a country that’s treated us very well,” Trump said. “I went to Boeing, I said, ‘Who has the best one?’ They said, ‘Qatar, there’s never been a plane like it.”

Though he approached Qatar about using the plane for a limited “period of time,” Trump said the emir of Qatar, Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani, instead gifted the plane, saying, “I’d like to make a contribution to the country.”

President Trump says the new Air Force One was provided as a gift from Qatar and upgraded to meet presidential security standards, calling it unlike any aircraft ever built.

After the delivery of the new jets, Trump had previously said that the Qatari plane would be donated to a future presidential library.

The red, white and blue jet took off from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland en route to North Dakota, where the president will participate in a Freedom 250 train ride and tour the library in Medora. He is expected to give remarks afterward.
