Melissa Gilbert Criticizes Stage Parents After Death of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Actor Daveigh Chase: Child Stardom Is ‘Not a Guarantee of Dysfunction’
Melissa Gilbert called out careless parents of child stars in an emotional tribute post to Daveigh Chase, the “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Ring” actor who died of AIDS on June 16 at 35 years old.
In an Instagram post, Gilbert revealed that she and Chase starred in a pilot together more than 20 years ago, and she could see a concerning parenting dynamic.
“I only worked with Daveigh a couple of days, but I could see she was bright both in countenance and in mind. She was bubbly, sweet and professional. But there was something else there, a push or need to perform…for her parents,” Gilbert wrote in her caption, which was accompanied by a picture of a young Chase smiling.

Gilbert was also a child actor, having famously starred in “Little House on the Prairie,” which she wrote led to her being frequently exposed to stage parents.
“Child stardom, in itself, is not a guarantee of dysfunction. However, when a parent or parents lose sight of who THEY are, of what their true responsibility is, and their lives revolve solely around their little star child, well, that’s where the trouble begins,” Gilbert continued. “It takes strong parenting to handle all that comes with it. The terrible part is that so few child actors continue on to have careers as actors. For most, it goes away, and when that happens it not only devastates the child, but it turns the whole family upside down.”
She adds, “Today, reading the circumstances of Daveigh’s death, I’m truly heartbroken. I certainly understand substance addiction disorder, but this sweet girl’s death is so much more. If I had the chance to speak to any parents who were thinking about getting their children in the industry, I would tell them to please, please make sure that they are doing it for the right reasons. That they will take the child to an accountant regularly so that he or she knows exactly what he or she is making, and where it is going. To be sure it’s something the child really wants. To be sure that that child has a life outside of the industry that is thriving and full of friends and responsibilities and ‘normal’ things. I would also ask that these parents memorize this sweet girl’s face and her story so that it never happens again.”
The Los Angeles Coroner’s Office revealed Chase died of AIDS, with “chronic polysubstance use” as a secondary cause.
Chase’s boyfriend Roy Hernandez initially told TMZ she had contract meningitis and sepsis. The former actress also had a long struggle with homelessness and substance abuse.
Chase had her breakthrough as the voice of Lilo in “Lilo & Stitch,” which she went on to voice in “Stitch! The Movie,” “Leroy & Stitch” and “Lilo & Stitch: The Series.” She also starred as Samara Morgan in the horror film “The Ring” and as Samantha Darko, the younger sister of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in both “Donnie Darko” and “S. Darko.”

Sotomayor’s $4K concert ticket 'gift' from Bad Bunny’s label sparks SCOTUS ethics debate

In the Supreme Court justices’ annual financial disclosure forms, it has been revealed that Justice Sonia Sotomayor received concert tickets as a “gift” for herself and other guests during a private trip to Puerto Rico from the record label representing superstar Bad Bunny.
While the disclosure documents do not explicitly name Bad Bunny, he was performing a highly publicized run of shows on the island at the exact time of her visit. Rimas Entertainment also represents other Latin music artists, but Bad Bunny is their premier act.
On Monday, it was revealed that Rimas Entertainment gifted the justice, who is of Puerto Rican descent, tickets valued at $4,333 while she was on a trip to Puerto Rico in August 2025.
This has sparked massive public debate, with critics arguing that accepting these types of “gifts” damage the court’s integrity and could appear to be a bribe.
As mentioned, in her disclosure, she didn’t explicitly say if the tickets were for Bad Bunny or another Rimas Entertainment act. However, it is important to note that Bad Bunny headlined a 15-date sold-out concert series in San Juan the exact month she was in Puerto Rico.
The musical talent has been in the spotlight, most recently, for headlining the Super Bowl LX halftime show. His performance triggered a wave of more than 2,000 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) complaints from individuals who referred to it as “pornographic,” “vulgar” and inappropriate for young viewers.
Many Americans were also reportedly disappointed with the lack of English in his songs — considering he was preforming at the largest yearly U.S. sporting event.
This is not the first time that a Supreme Court justice was gifted concert tickets. Back in 2024, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson revealed that she received nearly $4,000 worth of concert tickets from Beyoncé.
The financial disclosure reports are meant to reflect to the public other sources of income they receive, such as from investments, books and teaching. Typically, the highest source of income for justices are through memoirs, legal histories, and children’s books they publish.

Add The New York Post on GoogleA 5-year-old South Carolina boy described by family as “vibrant and full-of-life” was mauled to death by two large-breed dogs while at the home of a caregiver, the county sheriff’s department confirmed.
JayCeon Gates was attacked by a bull mastiff and a pit bull terrier just before 7:30 a.m. on Saturday in Ladson, about 20 miles northwest of his hometown of Charleston, and was injured along with an unidentified adult.

The child was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.
“Both dogs were seized and are in custody pursuant to a search warrant on the date of the incident,” a Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office spokesman told The Post, who said although both dogs were involved in the fatal attack, it was still under investigation, in part to determine which dog was the “primary aggressor.”
As for the fate of the animals, the spokesman declined to speculate, saying that decision was in the hands of animal control.

A GoFundMe set up as a tribute to little JayCeon notes the family’s “unimaginable grief and hardship.”
“This vibrant, full-of-life, autistic boy was loved deeply by his mom and big sister, and his passing has left a hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him,” the fundraiser set up by relative Danielle Riley reads in part.
“JayCeon’s family is reaching out for support to help cover the funeral expenses and provide comfort during this incredibly difficult time. Any financial donation will help, and your prayers and well wishes will bring a small measure of comfort to his mom and big sister as they navigate this loss.”

The GoFundMe had raised nearly $7,000 of its $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.
Riley did not immediately respond to a message from The Post, but posted an invitation on Facebook welcoming those who wish to honor JayCeon with a balloon release on July 5, asking attendees to bring Power Ranger, Paw Patrol and car-themed balloons.
