Germany vs Paraguay - World Cup last 32 RECAP

Relive Daily Mail Sport's live coverage of the latest updates as Germany take on Paraguay in the last 32 of the World Cup in Boston.

Paraguay stun Germany

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

Wow, just wow.

I'm still stunned, to be honest. That is one of the biggest upsets I have ever seen at the World Cup, and no, I'm not being dramatic. A huge, huge shock.

Paraguay nearly threw it all away in the shootout, twice, but this is not the Germany of old, and they could not make them pay. Jose Canale made sure not to give them a third chance.

It goes down as the greatest footballing day in Paraguay's history, and one of the darkest in Germany's.

Paraguay's reward? A round of 16 clash with either France or Sweden.

But they don't need to worry or care about that, and I doubt they do. Right now they are just going to celebrate the achievement, and the party will go on for many hours back home.

What a night, and thank you for all following along with us. Goodnight.

Despair for Deustchland

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

While it was joy for one nation, it was despair for the other.

No one, and I mean no one, saw that coming. The German players and fans are stunned; they simply can't believe what has just happened.

The pictures tell the story.

Scenes of celebration

Just look at what it means.

This is the greatest feat in the history of Paraguayan football. There have been fans crying, players crying, and I think even I have cried (obviously joking).

A special, special victory.

Gomez: 'We are strong and united'

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

Gustavo Gomez, Paraguay captain, reacting to the result:

I think that what we are feeling right now is really hard to explain. I am really proud of my colleagues, of the team. We deserved one more game, to be honest.

I think, considering everything that was said, everything we went through, what I want to highlight from my team is how united we are. We are incredibly strong.

Today was a game where we needed to show our true colours as the Paraguayan team. Germany knew it would be really hard for them. They knew we would fight not to be defeated. We dedicate this to all the people of Paraguay.

'Unacceptable'

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

Thomas Hitzlsperger, former Germany midfielder, on BBC One:

It's hard to explain how Germany got into this tournament with so many problems; it's unacceptable. It doesn't look good for Julian Nagelsmann. In the last few months, he hasn't dealt with situations well. It didn't take much and the sentiment changed.

A new low for Germany?

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

What is going on with German football?

Ever since they last got their hands on the Jules Rimet trophy back in 2014, they have fallen apart on the international stage.

Out in the group stage in 2018. Out in the group stage in 2022. Now out in the round of 32 in the new format.

Personally, I think this may be the worst of the lot.

To lose to a side like Paraguay in the newly formed round of 32 is something that should never be happening to a Germany team. Especially when you think of the talent they possess.

I imagine the German media is going ham right now. They will not be happy one bit.

Something needs to change.

WATCH: Paraguay knock out Germany

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

We simply have to watch the winning penalty. What a moment.

You just had a feeling that it was meant to be when Jose Canale stepped up for that penalty.

The defender had the game of his life on what was his full World Cup debut for Paraguay.

It was written in the stars.

Huge celebrations

These are quite the scenes.

The Paraguay players are now celebrating with their fans, of which there are not many, in the corner.

The flags are waving, and the players are joining in with chants while dancing on the pitch.

This is a night that the whole country will always remember; it will forever go down as the day they stunned four-time World Cup winners Germany.

Simply special.

Germany stunned in Boston

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

Wow.

Guys, I can't believe it. What a story.

For the first time ever, a country has beaten Germany in a penalty shootout at the World Cup. I really never thought I would see the day.

The Paraguayans are starting the party down on that pitch, bouncing about the place. I bet they can't believe it either.

The biggest shock of this World Cup, so far.

Jose Canale has had the game of his life. Now can he win it?

Yes. He. Can.

Germany have been dumped out on penalties for the very first time in World Cup history.
