Andy Burnham used over £16,000 of taxpayer cash to buy a flat in London during a previous stint in Government, it has emerged. The former Manchester Mayor, who was elected MP for Makerfield last month, bought a two-bedroom flat in south London while serving in Tony Blair's Government in 2005.

Mr Burnham bought the flat with his wife after luxury accommodation complex Dolphin Square was sold in the same year, with residents handed a payout, which many MPs gave to Parliamentary authorities, according to the Daily Mail. But the Labour leadership hopeful negotiated a deal where he added nearly £18,200 to a second home allowance, enabling the purchase and renovation of the £215,000 flat in Kennington.
