Republican New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean Jr. revealed Tuesday on the House floor that depression caused his months-long absence from Congress.
Kean revealed the diagnosis after returning to Congress for the first time since March 5. The congressman’s illness remained undisclosed throughout his absence, though he remained in contact with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
“Several months ago, due to health concerns, I entered the hospital for some testing. I did not believe that this would result in a long-term stay. I was given the diagnosis of depression,” Kean said. “Now, when people hear the word depression, many people think it simply means feeling sad, but depression is so much more than that. It is physical, it is emotional, and as soon as you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be. The doctors recommended that I remain in the hospital to address my illness.” (RELATED: Missing GOP Rep Purportedly Breaks Silence After Trump Endorsement — But His Whereabouts Are Still Unknown)

The congressman said there was no clear timeline for recovery.
“When I first informed the public that I was dealing with a medical issue, I was still trying to understand what was happening myself,” Kean continued. “When I said I hoped to return in a matter of weeks, I believed it. Those were the best estimates that the doctors could provide. But as over 48 million of my fellow Americans being treated for this illness come to discover, there is no timeline for healing. There is no timeline for recovery.”
Kean missed every roll call vote in the House since March 5 and missed 20% of the votes between January and March, according to GovTrack. The congressman will likely face a competitive reelection bid against Democratic candidate Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey’s seventh district, which flipped Republican in 2022 due to redistricting.
President Donald Trump endorsed Kean on June 2, claiming that he is “working tirelessly” to achieve the Republican agenda.
“A Tremendous Advocate of our America First Agenda, Tom is working tirelessly to Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Champion Small Business, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Support our Brave Military and Veterans, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
Kean traded stocks during his absence, with financial records showing that he bought and sold shares of eight different stocks between March 10 and March 31, including Johnson & Johnson, Amcor, Chubb Limited and First Citizens BancShares. The combined value of the trades ranged from $50,008 to $190,000.
The New Jersey congressman also signed at least two documents approving the travel of his chief of staff, Daniel J. Scharfenberger, on March 13 and March 14.
In May, New Jersey Republican leaders said Kean “sounded good” after speaking with him, Politico reported.

What's next for the Lakers?
LeBron James is gone.
They have all this cap space.
They already resigned Austin Reaves, DeAndre Ayton opted in, Marcus Smart might be leaving.
How are they gonna perfectly construct this roster around Luka Doni?
What's this grand plan that Rob Pelinka has been building towards around Luka?
'Cause I'm not seeing it.
What I'm seeing is Pelinka botch decision after decision after decision over the last five years.
And this is another one, because LeBron James is still a top 25 player in the NBA, but he felt exiled ever since they acquired Luka Doni.
Ramona Shelburne from ESPN said they had a meeting with Luka about the future and how to build the team, and it didn't include LeBron James.
AdvertisementAdvertisementwe already know earlier this year, LeBron was slighted when Rob Pelinka barged into the room and, and honored JJ Redick for his, his 100th win, even though LeBron James had another record and JJ was about to give him the game ball before Pelinka came in.
All these little things, you can say LeBron's just being a big, whiny baby.
You can say all that, and that might be true.
It is partially true.
But you can also understand why the guy would feel slighted after he spent eight years there, and very clearly, the Lakers were pushing him out the door.
W- We want you, we want you to be here, but actually, secretly, they want you gone.
AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's what happened with the Lakers.
And so what's Pelinka gonna do?
What are the Lakers gonna do?
What's this new ownership gonna do, run by the Dodgers, who have had great success in building out that baseball team?
So what's gonna happen with the basketball team?
We'll find out in the coming days and in the coming weeks, but I'm skeptical about this whole grand plan that the Lakers supposedly have, 'cause they haven't shown much of a plan over the last five years, ever since they won the championship in the bubble in 2020.
So I'll see it when I believe it.

The Memphis Grizzlies, though.
Cam Boozer- Oh, boy of the, of the, of the talented top three, or top four, really.
But of that talented top four, like, Cam Boozer was my favorite of the group.
Like, give me a big fella that can post up and drive and run some pick and rolls, can pass.
Like, there's just a versatility offensively to him that I think is I can't say it's getting slept on, 'cause he went top three, and he was in conversation for number one until very late in the process, so I don't wanna overdo it.
But I don't know if people understand, like, a guy that is just good at that many things already, while also being, like, 19.
AdvertisementAdvertisementLike, there is just a super high ceiling on top of all this.
So him going to Memphis in particular, #draftgoodbasketballplayers.
We are back, baby.
You get Kareem Lopez after some trade downs.
You get Richie Saunders to get you some buckets in the second round.
And I also love the bit of let's get some draft picks to slide down to 21 to get Kareem Lopez, and then let's also send those picks back to Detroit to get Isaiah Stewart essentially for free.
And so now you have the center rotation of Zach E, if he's healthy, who's just been a plus/minus monster, and in general, just draws a lot of attention on the interior.
AdvertisementAdvertisementYou then go to Isaiah Stewart, who's one of the best interior defenders in basketball.
You have Cam Boozer, who can play off of either one of those dudes.
Because of the, Ja Morant trade, you have more wings and forwards in the room to where if you wanna play Cam Boozer at the five at all, you at least have the lineup versatility to do that.
This is where I'm just super high on the Memphis Grizzlies overall, Steve.
