The King opens Royal Week with key ceremony and glorious Garden Party
Smiling as he chatted with members of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, King Charles appeared in good spirits as he officially started his week in Scotland.
The King, who opened the Scottish Parliament on Saturday, cut a dapper figure in a grey suit with a blue cornflower in his lapel as he was presented with the keys to the city of Edinburgh in a ceremony marking the start of Royal Week.
Charles attended the traditional Ceremony of the Keys in the gardens of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, his official residence in the capital.
Each year the monarch traditionally spends a week based at Holyroodhouse, an event known as Holyrood Week or Royal Week in Scotland.
After Charles arrived by helicopter, a guard of honour was provided by Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Also on parade were the King’s bodyguard for Scotland – the Royal Company of Archers.
Music was provided by the band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and Pipes and Drums of 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Charles met senior military figures and received a royal salute during the ceremony.

The Lord Provost of Edinburgh Robert Aldridge presents the keys to the City of Edinburgh to King Charles
Edinburgh Lord Provost Robert Aldridge presented the keys to the King, holding them on a red cushion.
Mr Aldridge said: ‘We, the Lord Provost and members of the City of Edinburgh Council, welcome Your Majesty to the capital city of your ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland, and offer for your gracious acceptance the keys of Your Majesty’s good city of Edinburgh.’
In return, Charles gave the traditional reply: ‘I return these keys perfectly convinced that they cannot be placed in better hands than those of the Lord Provost and councillors of my good city of Edinburgh.’
And while the cornflower in his lapel might seem like nothing more than a fashion accessory, it holds significance in terms of his work raising issues affecting the environment.
The humble blue cornflower can frequently be seen in the monarch’s buttonhole and has been a regular feature of his attire for many years.
For instance, it appeared in a striking photographic portrait by Nadav Kander in 2013.
Now endangered in its natural habitat, the flower draws attention to the King’s environmental concerns.
This interest was something he touched upon at the weekend as he opened the Scottish Parliament.
During the ceremony on Saturday, he told MSPs the planet's climate was ‘changing dangerously’ and warned its biodiveristy was being ‘seriously depleted’.

Vance argues there is a ‘big silver lining’ in Supreme Court’s ‘preposterous ruling’ in birthright citizenship case

Add The New York Post on GoogleVice President JD Vance argued Tuesday that there is a “big silver lining” in the divided Supreme Court ruling striking down President Trump’s executive order outlawing birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants and tourists.
“I know a lot of conservatives, Laura, certainly the people that I’m talking to, that you’re talking to, are extremely disappointed in this, but I do actually think there’s a really big silver lining here, and that’s the simple fact that a lot of legal experts expected this case to go the wrong direction by seven to two, or even eight to one,” Vance said in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
“The fact that this case was a 5-to-4 decision effectively means that the concept of birthright citizenship, which is an absurdity to the 14th Amendment, that concept is hanging by a thread,” the vice president argued during his appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.”

Chief Justice John Roberts and fellow conservative Amy Coney Barrett were joined in the majority by liberal Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor. The majority ruled that Trump’s order violated the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship guarantee.

A sixth justice, Brett Kavanaugh, found that the order did not violate the 14th Amendment, but did violate federal law from the 1940s and 1950s.
“What I take from [the ruling] is, yes, we’ve got to fix the immigration system even more, we have to be even more aware of who’s coming into our country to make sure that they’re not benefiting from this atrocious Supreme Court ruling,” Vance said, adding, “but it also means that we have to keep fighting … because we actually have an opportunity to reverse this decision.”
The vice president further argued that the high court’s “major, major mistake” might invite pregnant foreign nationals “to come here quite literally on a vacation, give birth, and then all of a sudden the child and their family have the full benefits of American citizenship.”
“It’s just a preposterous ruling, and the absurdity of that outcome suggests why the Supreme Court should have went the other way.”

Blue Jays Announce Troubling Vladimir Guerrero Jr. News After Exiting Starting Lineup
Story by
Gavin GroeTue, June 30, 2026 at 9:35 PM UTC·2 min readToronto Blue Jaysfirst basemanVladimir Guerrero Jr. is in the middle of a career-worst season. The 27-year-old superstar has posted a .268 batting average, .347 on-base percentage, .695 OPS, four home runs and 34 RBIs across 81 games.
The Blue Jays have had a disappointing season after last year's dream run to the World Series, and it is hard to point the blame at anyone more than Guerrero.
AdvertisementAdvertisementHe is the face of the franchise and only in year one of his massive 14-year, $500 million contract. He is a five-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award winner, so the expectations are naturally high, and he has fallen well short of them this year.
Guerrero has not been at full strength this season, which may be contributing to his struggles. He has continued to deal with back tightness throughout June, missing multiple games due to the injury. However, he had been trying to push through it, and it had not flared up in over a week.
AdvertisementAdvertisementUnfortunately, it flared up again before Tuesday's game against the New York Mets. Guerrero was originally included in the starting lineup but was scratched hours before game time.
Luis Urias entered the lineup in his place, stepping in defensively at second base, with Ernie Clement shifting to the hot corner and rookie Sean Keys taking over the vacant spot at first base.
Moments later, the Blue Jays confirmed the reason for his removal. "UPDATE: 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was removed from tonight's starting lineup with back tightness," the team wrote on X.
AdvertisementAdvertisementManager John Schneider will likely provide further updates on Guerrero's condition after the game.
It is still unclear whether this is a day-to-day situation or, given that this is the third time the back has flared up this month, whether the Blue Jays may be forced to place him on the 10-day injured list.
