A huge fire erupted near Copeland Park in Peckham, London, as black smoke filled the sky. Social media reports say the blaze is coming from the shop Khan's Bargains on Rye Lane, though this has not been confirmed by the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

Images posted to X show thick clouds of dark grey smoke in the sky as firefighters begin to tackle the blaze. LFB said in an update: "Firefighters are responding to a fire on Rye Lane in Peckham. The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed at this time.

"Traffic in the area is also likely to be impacted, so members of the public are advised to avoid the area if they can. Two of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders have been deployed to the scene. Control Officers took the first of over 30 calls at 2054. The cause of the fire is not yet known."

LFB issue further statement after Peckham Rye fire

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been tackling a fire on Rye Lane in Peckham.

Station Commander Craig Abbott has issued furhter comment in the wake of the fire at Peckham Rye.

"Firefighters have worked hard and the fire in Peckham is now under control," he said. "At the height of the fire, a department store was alight. Crews will remain on scene until the morning to fully extinguish the fire and dampen down remaining hotspots."

"A significant amount of smoke was produced by the fire and local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed at this time.

"Traffic in the area is also likely to remain impacted, so members of the public are advised to continue to avoid the area if they can."

A total of 41 calls came through to alert crews to the blaze just before 9pm, mobilising crews from Peckham, Old Kent Road, Brixton, and other surrounding fire stations to the scene.

The fire was under control by 11.50pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SE Rail halt all services to Peckham Rye

Southeastern railway have confirmed it will not stop at Peckham Rye for the rest of the night.

"Tickets accepted on London buses," the railway operator said via social media.

More than 30 calls fielded about fire

Officers working the London Fire Brigade switchboard took the first of over 30 calls at just before 9pm, and have mobilised crews from Peckham, Old Kent Road, Brixton and other surrounding fire stations to the scene.

Turntable ladders on scene

Two of the LFB's 32-metre turntable ladders have been deployed to the scene. Turntable ladders are power-operated extending ladders permanently mounted on the back of specialised fire engines.

Mounted on a rotating platform, they provide 360-degree access for high-rise rescues, firefighting from above, and directing water jets at difficult angles.
