TWIN QUAKES: Back-to-back earthquakes rocked Venezuela last night, killing at least 164 people and injuring around 1,000, authorities have said. Those tolls are set to rise given the extensive damage across the South American country.
AID PLEDGES: With frantic rescue efforts underway, pledges of aid poured in from around the world. The U.S. said it was “immediately deploying search and rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian assistance.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. response would be “big, it’ll be fast, and it’ll be effective.”
HOMES COLLAPSED: The quakes struck during a national holiday in Venezuela, with many people at home. Images showed buildings flattened and roads collapsed in Caracas, while the area of La Guaira was particularly hit hard.
STATE OF EMERGENCY: Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and announced on state television that the airport in Caracas was closed, trains suspended and school canceled for several days.

'Still missing': Venezuelans search, wait to hear from loved ones
Maria Auxiliadora Vegas, 67, stood outside a collapsed building in Caracas' Altamira neighborhood today looking for answers on the whereabouts of her ex-husband, the father of two of her adult sons.
Her family has not yet heard from him or his wife since two powerful earthquakes rattled Venezuela last night. They even visited a nearby clinic to see if he was taken there.
"But nothing — he is still missing," Vegas said in Spanish. "We are waiting to see what happens. We hope to God for a good outcome and that he turns up alive alongside his wife."

Venezuelan mother speaks about surviving quake with 7-year-old: 'It felt eternal'
Rachell Sandoval was in her bedroom watching TV when she felt her bed "shaking violently."
"That’s when I get up and realize an earthquake was happening," Sandoval told Noticias Telemundo.
She immediately dashed out of her room, looking for her 7-year-old son.
"I grabbed and hugged him — but at that moment, it was so intense that all I could think was, 'What do I do? Do I go downstairs? Do I stay?' I completely froze."
Sandoval and her child stood under a doorframe until it stopped shaking. "It felt eternal," she said. "I hear the windows rattling and people screaming."
She felt that her apartment building was going to collapse on top of them. When it stopped, Sandoval grabbed her keys and left her apartment. Everyone inside the building ran down the emergency stairs.
After that, Sandoval headed to the Hotel Altamira Suites in Caracas to find her friend.
"She was on the 18th floor. She managed to get down, and I went to that area to look for her. As I was entering Altamira, I filmed the building where the wall had completely collapsed," Sandoval said. "That was when I realized the magnitude of the earthquake."
She spent the night in her car with her son because the boy "is scared of going back into the apartment," Sandoval said, adding that they barely were able to sleep through the night because of the recurrent aftershocks.
"This was a disaster; this was huge," she said.

Earthquake survivor who lost his home says rescuers are 'completely overwhelmed'
Nelson Ospedales felt the earthquakes from his home in Caracas' Altamira neighborhood.
"Material possessions can be recovered, but at this moment, the competent authorities — such as firefighters and civil defense — have been completely overwhelmed. They need more personnel," Ospedales said. "Hospitals have become severely congested."

Venezuelan Red Cross said full impact is not yet known
The Venezuelan Red Cross said in a statement that "the full human impact is not yet known" from the double earthquakes that rocked the country.
Assessments of the damage are preliminary, the statement said, as aftershocks continue to pose risks to those who live in the country and to the teams descending to help clean up the rubble.
As agencies continue to assess the damage, the immediate needs include search and rescue, emergency shelter for families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed, and emergency healthcare, including trauma care and psychosocial support, the Red Cross said.
In the coming hours and days, safe water and sanitation and essential household items are expected to become priorities.

A video aired on Venezuelan state TV showed what it described as a miraculous rescue of three children from under rubble in La Guaira, after two earthquakes hit the region and leveled several buildings.
In the footage, three children appear to be emerging from the rubble one after another, seemingly without major injuries, as rescuers provided assistance.

Internet outages persist across Venezuela; U.N. calls for restored access to social media
Internet outages across Venezuela have been reported by NetBlocks, an independent internet and cybersecurity watchdog, as the United Nations calls on authorities to restore people’s access to social media.
Nine hours after earthquakes struck Venezuela, “national internet connectivity remains diminished despite some recovery,” NetBlocks said in a post on X.
“The outage corresponds to power cuts and infrastructure damage, hindering rescue efforts and limiting visibility into events on the ground,” it added.
Separately, the U.N. Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela said it was vital that CONATEL, the country’s telecommunications regulator, “fully unblock access to social media and all media outlets.”
“In the coming hours and days, access to information will be a matter of life and death,” the organization said in a statement on its website.

Many buildings in quake-hit region vulnerable to shaking, USGS says
Venezuela's building stock could be a significant factor in the scale of damage and casualties caused by the earthquakes.
The United States Geological Survey said that although more resistant buildings exist, the population in the affected region largely lives in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking.
“The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and adobe block construction,” the agency said in an estimated assessment of losses published on its website.

U.S. to send disaster assistance team to Venezuela
The U.S. is planning to send "critical assistance" to Venezuela after the earthquake, Jeremy Lewin, the State Department’s senior official in charge, said on X.
He said that a disaster assistance team and task force has already been mobilized.

American Airlines cancels flights from Miami to Caracas
American Airlines, which operates two daily flights between Miami and Caracas, said the flights are canceled for today in light of the earthquake.
A statement from the airline said it decided to cancel the routes because Simón Bolivar International Airport in Caracas, Venezuela, is closed after sustaining damage in the earthquake.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate closely with local authorities as they assess the damage to the airport," American said in the statement.

Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency last night, announcing the closure of Caracas’ international airport and disruptions to public services in affected areas.
“Maiquetía Airport is currently closed due to severe damage to its infrastructure,” Rodríguez said in a video address on Venezuelan state television, adding that the suspension of metro and rail services is required to “support rescue operations and infrastructure repairs.”

World leaders offer condolences and support
World leaders are expressing their condolences today and pledging support through aid, search and rescue assistance and military equipment. Here's a round-up:
Germany said it's ready to deploy up to six military aircraft to help with relief efforts in Venezuela, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said 300 rescuers and paramedics, along with 50 tons of equipment, medicines and essential supplies, were ready to depart for Caracas.
The European Union said it had activated Copernicus, its main satellite and "we stand ready to step up assistance," wrote Hadja Lahbib, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management on X.

China, one of the largest purchasers of Venezuela's oil, said it would help Venezuela as best as it could. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a daily news briefing there had been no reports of Chinese casualties, so far.
The leaders of France and Spain each expressed their sympathies on X. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families," said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. France's Emmanuel Macron sent his country's "thoughts and support" to the Venezuelan people.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio da Silva Lula expressed "great concern and dismay," over the impacts caused by the earthquake. His government was working to assess the situation in the country and "the measures of assistance that Brazil can adopt."
