Kylian Mbappe shines as France honor Didier Deschamps with World Cup win over Sweden
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There's a reason that there's an audible gasp each time that Kylian Mbappe touches the ball, as with a second, he can take your soul. Sweden's Viktor Gyokeres found that out the hard way at the end of the first half as Mbappe was able to dribble past his defender en route to opening the scoring in a 3-0 France victory. He'd add another along the way as he became the player with the second most goals in World Cup history behind only Lionel Messi with his 18th goal in the tournament.
It's strange watching such a free-flowing French team, as Didier Deschamps has been someone who has used players like Blaise Matuidi as wingers, centered teams around defensive soccer, and done everything possible to get his best 11 players on the field while playing defensively solid, but the difference in this France team to 2022 is that four of their best players are attackers who need to be on the pitch in Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise and Mbappe, with all but Barcola considered among the top five to 10 players in the world.

That opening goal was a significant one as well after Deschamps missed France's closing match in the group stage due to the death of his mother, so that he could go back home, but then returned ahead of the knockout stages. After scoring, Mbappe immediately ran to the sidelines to hug his coach, and the team followed. He's been taking control as the captain during this tournament, and this is the latest example of that with the national team.

— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) June 30, 2026"Yes, I think it was important. I think Kylian did it to support the coach, too," Malo Gusto said about the moment following the match. "It was a difficult time for him, so it was up to us to return the favor, and I think we did that very well tonight."
Mbappe added more on the moment and how important it is that the team is together.
"Not only me. I think the whole team, the whole team was there with him," Mbappe said. "I think it's important; there are things that are more important than a World Cup, more important than football. But as I said, it's the DNA of this group, to be all together, to really be united. We are all behind the coach, no matter what happens, no matter what will happen, we are all behind him, and we wanted to make him feel that he wasn't completely alone."
Those moments of rallying go a long way in a tournament as grueling as this one. The team has been away for a month at this stage, and care for each other goes a long way during these times.
On the pitch, the best Swedish defender was the post, which stopped France from scoring twice in the game, as even taking shots from outside the box for fun, no one could stop France once they got in their flow. But marching into the round of 16, this feels like a strength and a weakness for Les Bleus.
France have been one of, if not the best attacking side at this World Cup, that's true. But due to that attack, they also haven't been tested much defensively, only allowing nine shots on goal in this tournament. Set to face Paraguay in the round of 16 in Philadelphia on the fourth of July, it's yet another game where France will be the overwhelming favorite and not face a team that can match them in possession.
You can only face who is put in front of you, and France have passed each test so far, but there's always time to ponder what could come next. Mbappe acknowledges the pressure that they're facing, but having now been to three World Cups with France, Mbappe and the team know what this is about, and they're able to ensure that the team is ready for the task.
"I think it's an apprehension that is just different," Mbappe said about the knockout stages. "Now, there is a lot of pressure, even in the group stage matches. Then again, in a 48-team competition like this, there's a little less, because we see that with 2 defeats, you can still advance. So it's true that the group stages were a little more relaxed in terms of pressure. There is a little more pressure now, but it's up to us, the players who have played in several World Cups, who have known this kind of atmosphere in the past, to guide the younger ones."
That balance and leadership will take the French national team far, especially since they'd still be favored against Canada or Morocco in the semifinals, but confidence and leadership will be needed should they come up against a side like Spain. Looking to make a third consecutive World Cup final, the pressure is on, and they're ready to rise to it.

The Cubs will go for a sweep of the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.Zoe Grossman|

Chicago CubsSan Diego PadresThe Chicago Cubs have won 14 of their last 18 games, and they'll look to stay scorching hot on Wednesday afternoon as they go for the sweep of the visiting San Diego Padres.
Cubs hitters smacked a season-high five home runs in Tuesday's 9-7 win, including a multi-homer game for Dansby Swanson (his second such game in his last eight). Also adding on were Alex Bregman, Michael Busch, and Pete Crow-Armstrong.
The Padres added four long balls of their own, two of them coming from Fernando Tatis Jr.
The wind will be blowing out to center field once again, which could set up a high-scoring afternoon finale.

Chicago Cubs Lineup
1. Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
2. Alex Bregman, 3B
3. Michael Busch, 1B
4. Seiya Suzuki, RF
5. Ian Happ, LF
6. Nico Hoerner, 2B
7. Michael Conforto, DH
8. Miguel Amaya, C
9. Dansby Swanson, SS
Craig Counsell shuffled the batting order back around after he dropped Busch to fifth on Tuesday. Busch is hitting just .111 over his last seven games, but his towering home run on Tuesday and a favorable matchup against right-hander Walker Buehler bring him back up to the three-hole.
Conforto reenters the fold after Kevin Alcántara took over utility duties in Tuesday's win. Conforto's RBI single on Monday helped lift the Cubs to a 3-2 win.
And while Swanson is in ninth, don't let that fool you – he's finally on the offensive tear that he's capable of having, hitting .309 (17-for-55) over his last 15 games with six home runs and 21 RBI.
San Diego Padres Lineup
1. Fernando Tatis Jr., RF
2. Gavin Sheets, LF
3. Manny Machado, DH
4. Ty France, 1B
5. Jackson Merrill, CF
6. Xander Bogaerts, SS
7. Jake Cronenworth, 2B
8. Rodolfo Durán, C
9. Sung-Mun Song, 3B
The Padres opt for four left-handed bats (Sheets, Merrill, Cronenworth, Song), to face a right-handed starter for the first time this series in Colin Rea.
San Diego hitters have racked up 24 hits in the first two games, but it's amounted to just nine total runs in the two losses. Although Machado hit a home run Tuesday, his offensive struggles have largely contributed to the Padres' larger issues at the plate. Machado's .189 average is tied for the worst in MLB among qualified hitters.
On The Mound...

Chicago Cubs - Colin Rea, RHP (5-5, 4.80 ERA)
Rea's biggest challenge will be keeping the ball out of the air in the finale. The positive is that he's coming off back-to-back starts without allowing a home run, which includes the five innings of one-run ball he tossed in Milwaukee last time out.
Rea still struggled in June, pitching to a 5.04 ERA in his five starts (25 IP).
Both Machado and Cronenworth have homered off Rea in the past and have seen success against the right-hander.
San Diego Padres - Walker Buehler, RHP (5-3, 3.81 ERA)
Cubs hitters are quite familiar with former longtime Los Angeles Dodger in Buehler.
Conforto has two home runs against the righty in 11 at-bats to go along with a 1.203 OPS. Busch has also homered off the 31-year-old.
Swanson has struggled against him, hitting just .154 in 13 at-bats.
Buehler has also been pitching very well over the last month. He had a 1.71 ERA in June and gave up just two home runs in 26.1 innings. He shut down his former team, the Dodgers, in his last start, going 5.1 innings and allowing just one earned run while punching out five.

Should OKC Thunder Consider LeBron James Pursuit?
Should OKC Thunder Consider LeBron James Pursuit?
The NBA's all-time leading scorer is once again a free agent.Ivan White|
In this story:
Oklahoma City ThunderThe NBA offseason has already been wild, and Oklahoma City may have a chance to get in on the action.
Over the past few days, the NBA has seen several significant moves that will impact the next few years as well as the 2027 title race. From Kawhi Leonard being traded back to Toronto to Ja Morant’s surprise trade to Portland, the offseason has been one of the wildest in recent memory and free agency hasn’t even been open for a full 24 hours yet.
While the NBA is still in the early stages of the 2026 free agency window, LeBron James has already made some headlines after opting not to return to the Los Angeles Lakers next season. Expected to weigh his options around the league, James’ next destination could be a real surprise.
Seemingly not in the market for another max contract at this stage of his career, James’ interest could lie with any team, even on a minimum contract. With that in mind, if winning is James’ top priority, it wouldn’t be shocking to see at least some interest from him in the team that has won the most games in the league in each of the past two seasons.
The Thunder’s offseason thus far has been headlined by deals sending out Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe for tax reasons and signing Isaiah Hartenstein to an extension. Should James have any legitimate interest in a move to Oklahoma City, the next question would be whether that addition would even make sense for the Thunder.
Last season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games. Eventually having to carry the Lakers in the postseason after Luka Doncic’s season-ending hamstring injury, James made it out of the first round before running into the Thunder in a second-round sweep.
Playing next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, James would again be taking a backseat, but he’d also have much more help around him than he did in Los Angeles. Considering acquiring James would almost certainly be via a veteran minimum deal, the Thunder wouldn’t have to gut any of their roster to sign him and could effectively add the All-Star forward with no drawbacks in terms of roster building.
However, getting him to accept a potentially steep role reduction and fitting into the Thunder’s defensive-minded system could be an issue for the 41-year-old. James’ playmaking and all-around ability could absolutely be helpful for Oklahoma City, especially if it sees similar injury issues next season, but adding a player of James’ caliber to what the Thunder have going is always a risk.
