We know there's a ring (and that it's worth a million dollars). There's a photo of the proposal, complete with a kiss, and flowers, all posted to Instagram. And now there are clues, suspicions, rumors, and wagers. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are getting married, but when or where remains one of the summer's greatest mysteries.

According to the New York Times, Taylor Swift has rented Madison Square Garden from July 2-4, with an unnamed “entertainment industry executive and another person with knowledge of the matter” telling the paper that 100 people are expected at an event at the New York City stadium on July 2, then on July 3 “about 1,000 guests would gather there for a splashier celebration, with possible stage appearances.”

All does not hinge on these anonymous sources, however, as the NYT reports that permits have been filed with the city to close MSG-area streets from July 2 to midday July 4, and that “Amtrak police officers, who patrol the station beneath the arena, have been told to expect a Swift wedding the weekend of July 4.” The outlet also reports that several of Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs teammates have booked hotel rooms that weekend at the Times Square Marriott Marquis.

Even New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani seems to know something big is in the works, saying at a World Cup-related press conference that “July 4, America 250, Taylor Swift's wedding [are] all happening at the same time.”

It's unclear if the mayor had inside information, or is—like the rest of us—basing his assumptions on what he's heard in the media. One thing we do know is that he didn't get his information from a save-the-date card, as he told the AP that he hasn't been invited to the Swift/Kelce nuptials, saying “I wish them a lovely wedding. I’ll listen to ‘Only the Young’ at home on my own.”

Located in the heart of Manhattan, MSG is a legendary, cultural, historical, and symbolic venue. Known as “The World’s Most Famous Arena” and boasting over a century of history, it has been the site of some of the events that have define America, from “The Fight of the Century” between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1971, to concerts by Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, and Billy Joel—who made it his artistic home for years. Swift herself has performed there on several occasions during various tours, and the venue has hosted high-profile weddings before, including Sly Stone's wedding to Kathy Silva in 1974 and a 1982 mass wedding of 2,075 couples presided over by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon.

But what if these rentals and permits are all a trick? According to CNN, which spoke with officers with Amtrak police and NYPD, skepticism about the rumored event abounds. “She’s a glamorous girl,” an NYPD officer stationed near MSG said. “She wouldn’t get married here.”

“Maybe a fake event at the Garden is an elaborate ruse to distract fans and media from a real wedding elsewhere,” speculates CNN's Zoe Sottile. “Maybe, ponder some fans, guests will be whisked off from MSG to another, more upscale venue — one where the aroma of hot dogs isn’t so strong.”

The only thing that can be stated with certainty is that official permits have been issued for Madison Square Garden and that some nearby streets will be closed on those dates. What remains unconfirmed is that these permits and closures are directly related to a wedding between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Yes, the stage has been set for something big and Taylor Swift-related in New York. What remains unclear is exactly what that “something” is.
