'Rangnick unhappy with Wimmer'

By Ian Herbert At Dallas Stadium

Rangnick is not happy with Patrick Wimmer missing that headed chance at the end. The result should have been 1-0 or 1-1 if Wimmer had headed the ball not the net. He’s also unhappy with the penalty Argentina were awarded. Asked if Argentina could win the World Cup, he said: ‘Of course.’

Rangnick: 'Messi is the best'

By Ian Herbert At Dallas Stadium

Ralf Rangnick, Austria boss, on Lionel Messi:

If someone is 39 years old and can score two goals and five overall, then that makes a difference. We knew he was on a level of his own and Messi showed us he is one of the best, he is the best. This is Lionel Messi. He doesn’t need many situations to decide a match.

Julian Alvarez, Argentina striker, on Lionel Messi:

He continues to demonstrate, even at his age, that he has the talent and all his magic. There's not much to say, we all see it, he's the best in the world.

On his injury:

I wasn't in the best shape the last few days, but I feel good now. I'm supporting the team and helping out however I can. Spectacular [victory], we started off on the right foot, we have to keep going down this path.

Messi: 'I'm running on fumes'

Lionel Messi, Argentina skipper, following the match:

I'm tired, I'm running on fumes, and it's hard to think. I'm enjoying this moment and looking forward to being with my teammates.

It's been spectacular how it all unfolded. Today I had the penalty, which could have increased my tally or not; perhaps the others wouldn't have come, you never know. I'm happy with the team.

Klopp congratulates Messi

author's avatarBy Harry Bamforth

Not something I thought I'd see today.

Lionel Messi went over to see fellow Argentine Maxi Rodriguez, but the next person to greet him after that was none other than former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

It seems like the events of May 2019 (you all know what I'm on about) are firmly behind them.

I told you EVERYONE wanted a piece of Messi.

'Messi is getting better with age'

Olivier Giroud, former France forward, on BBC One:

Lionel Messi is getting better and better with age. Five goals for Argentina in two games, the only scorer. He is always in the right place at the right time. He is in the middle to create and dictate the game.

Messi achieves WC win record

As you can tell, this post-match reaction is mainly going to be about Lionel Messi.

If I wasn't talking about him, I wouldn't be doing my job properly!

Anyway, I have just discovered that he broke another record in that game. Yep, a third one. Crazy.

He is now the player with the most wins in World Cup history. I mean, this is his sixth tournament of the sort, but still pretty impressive.

Hugs, hugs, and more hugs...

Everybody wants a piece of Lionel Messi after that performance; it's hugs galore in Dallas.

He even managed to find Angel Di Maria at a punditry desk, just to get another cheeky hug after the game.
