2026 U.S. Open Friday leaderboard: Wyndham Clark sets Shinnecock record at midway point

With his first two rounds now in the books, the field will be chasing him into the weekend.
Clark finished up a brilliant opening round on Friday morning. He posted a 6-under 64, which gave him a two-shot lead over the field as the second round got underway. By the time he finished Round 2, Clark got to 7-under on the week and will take a 4-shot lead into the weekend over Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick and Sam Stevens.
AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile it was just a 1-under 69 on Friday, that was enough to give Clark the 36-hole record at Shinnecock Hills. That 7-under mark is a number few expected to see at all this week, let alone after just two rounds.
Some big names will not make it to the weekend, most notably the LIV contingency of Jon Rahm (+6) and Bryson DeChambeau (+5). Both were in red numbers as the day began, but found serious trouble around Shinnecock. For DeChambeau, it means he’s 0-for-3 this year in cuts made at majors.

He missed a few birdie looks down the stretch, so Scottie Scheffler is stuck at E after his 2-under 68 today.
He’ll enter the weekend seven shots back.
James Nicholas brought a crew
Playing near his hometown, James Nicholas opened the U.S. Open on Thursday and then secured a spot in the weekend with a par save at the last today.
What a moment for him and his family.

Rory McIlroy is in the clubhouse after his second round, and the back nine wasn’t great. He posted a 1-over 71 today with three bogeys and a double on the back, but he did close with three straight pars to level off a bit.
He’s now at E on the week, and will enter Moving Day seven shots off the lead.
Sam Burns in with a bogey
Sam Burns just three putted for bogey at the last to wrap up his round. That’s a bad miss, and not how you want to finish.
He’s now 1-under on the week, six back of Wyndham Clark.
Scheffler back to E
Scottie Scheffler had an eagle look at the fifth, but a tap-in birdie works. He’s back to E for the week.
Even one more birdie the rest of the way would make a huge difference for him entering the weekend.

Finally, Rory has a par on the back nine. He had to work for it after overshooting the green at the 16th, but he got it.
He’s now seven back with two holes left tonight.
Patrick Reed's huge eagle
Patrick Reed just sank an eagle putt at the fifth. While he's way back, that moved him to 4-over for the week.
He'll need another birdie or two to be safe, but Reed is now inside the projected cutline. We'll see how he finishes here.
Rory doubles
Well, Rory McIlroy’s back nine is all over the place. He’s somehow yet to card a par after making the turn.
McIlroy just made a double at the 15th after overshooting the green and then sending his chip back into the bunker. Not great.
He’s now at E for the week.

Sam Stevens rallied perfectly after a pair of early bogeys — and a double bogey on his very first hole of the tournament — and he’s officially in with a 1-under 69 today.
That pushed him to 3-under, safely in with the group tied for second. The 29-year-old out of Wichita has never won on Tour, but he did go T23 at the U.S. Open last season for his best major finish.
Rory with another from DEEP
Make it back-to-back birdies for Rory McIlroy now, this time from DEEP! He started laughing immediately once it fell.
He's back to 2-under now, tied for fifth.
Keith Mitchell's wild ride continues
Keith Mitchell is having a ridiculous first two days at Shinnecock. After his 41-29 rollercoaster on Thursday, he just sank a 55-footer to save a bogey. Wild.
Mitchell is at 1-over now for the week.

The skid is over, and Rory McIlroy is back in the red. He stuck his approach at the 13th less than a foot from the cup to set up an easy birdie, and he's now back under par for the week.
This final stretch for him will be critical entering the weekend.

Back-to-back bogeys for Rory
After making the turn at 2-under for his round, Rory McIlroy has given them both back after two bogeys at 10 and 11. He’s back to -1, six shots back of Wyndham Clark, whose lead is safe.

Sam Burns has a blemish-free scorecard so far today, and has mixed in four birdies to get to 3-under for the tournament. The last birdie came at the very difficult No. 11.

That led to a bogey, and now McIlroy is at -2.
